You can make anything you want and get the help you need with any project.   Just let us know your ideas and we’ll help you achieve them and realise your sewing potential!

Since 2007, in our weekly classes we have taught the following: dressmaking, bags and accessories, soft furnishing including curtains and blinds, patchwork and quilting, machine embroidery, toy making and all the exciting variations in-between!

If you are a complete beginner and need more guidance then we can suggest simple projects which will cover the basic techniques such as cutting out, seams, hems, inserting a zip, buttonholes, facings and understanding fit and pattern instructions.

The mixed ability classes allow you to learn and gain inspiration from each other in a friendly and fun environment.

During the sessions, Angela will encourage your child to be creative whilst they work on fun and imaginative projects, learning the principles of sewing and skills that can translate into craft, fashion and interior designs items.  They will learn how to set up a machine, learn about what the machine can do, including different stitch widths and lengths and about pinning, cutting out and sewing from a basic pattern including valuable shortcuts and simple sewing tips and much more!

There is a set curriculum of projects for complete beginners including bags, cushions and toys that have been specifically chosen to cover all the important basic techniques and subsequently if they are completed, then certificates are awarded from beginner, intermediate and advanced levels.

For safety reasons due to the dexterity needed and height, we teach children from seven years upwards.

Classes for both adults and children are of mixed ability so you can gain inspiration and motivation from each other. You can also learn at your own pace and not ever feel you are being left behind.

To allow you lots of personal attention and guidance, classes have no more than 6 students per session.

Angela worked in the fashion industry and interior design industry for over 20 years before setting up The Sewing Club in 2007.  As well as an Honour’s degree in Fashion & Textile design, she is qualified to teach and has experience of teaching adults and children since 1990.  She has also gained experience over the years of mentoring GCSE, A level, DoE entrants and degree students.

She wrote her first sewing book in 2022 ‘Sewing Machine basics for Children’ and her second book ‘Simple Machine Sewing’ was published in 2024  (see Shop).  Both books are best sellers and the first book has been on Amazon’s bestsellers’ list and in the top 5 since its release.

Angela is currently working on her third book.

On a weekly course all equipment (scissors, marking tools, rulers etc) and modern sewing machines can be supplied.  Although we do encourage you to bring your own equipment, i.e., scissors that you are familiar with and particularly pins which do disappear easily!

We have a large library of dress patterns and books you can use and borrow.  A small amount of fabric can be supplied for beginners to get you started, for example enough to make a lined tote bag or zipped cushion, but subsequently you must venture out and get excited about buying your own fabric!  Fabric is not supplied for a taster session.  We can give lots of good, unbiased advice on where to buy sewing equipment and fabric.

If you have your own sewing machine, but a bit unsure of what it can do, then you can bring it along and learn on your own machine.

Everything is supplied on the children’s courses.

If the course has already started, you can always ask if we have a space available for you. Students work at their own pace so you can join up anytime and you won’t have missed anything!  We won’t ask you to pay for sessions missed of that course.

We don’t offer make-up classes anymore because we want to keep the classes with the same people each week.

You can always come for a one-off taster session (£20 for a 2hr session) on any course, just ask and we’ll see if we can fit you in.

We almost always have a waiting list for the children’s classes so make sure you’re on our mailing list by emailing us at thesewingclub@outlook.com and ask to be put on it.

We give priority to existing students to continue (and some students come for years!) so we wait for them to let us know if they are returning and then the places are offered out to the waiting list.

To book please firstly contact The Sewing Club at thesewingclub@outlook.com and let us know what time and date course you are interested in.  All the current times and dates are kept updated on the website.  We will let you know about availability and to secure a place, we ask for the fee to be paid in full and in advance of the course starting.  Payment is via bank transfer and these details will be emailed to you when a place is available.  To renew and continue on a course there is usually a deadline by when you have to pay and priority is given to existing students wishing to renew.

The Sewing Club, Beach Creative, Studio 4, Beach Street, Herne Bay, Kent CT6 5PT.  Parking is easy: there is William Street carpark next door and nearby residential streets.

The studio is on the first floor, up one flight of steps.  There is a toilet upstairs.

Changes are constantly happening but these are the main differences.  If you’ve booked onto a course any current additional info will be emailed to you.

Class sizes

We will now restrict class sizes to 6 students per session to allow for enough space around each work station.  There will be no making up lessons on another day as these 6 students will form a “class bubble” for the full term and no one else will join that “bubble”.

Movement in class

Students will be encouraged to stay seated and stand up at their own table if necessary

Students can use our sewing machines or bring their own but they must bring the equipment they need, i.e. scissors, thread, an unpicker, a tape measure/ruler, pins and a pincushion (magnetic ones are good!)

Tea break

A tea break is always welcome but we will encourage you to bring your own refreshments.  We have an amazing café downstairs at Beach Creative.

We are currently not wearing masks but this may change so please adhere to the studio’s rules if we decide we should be wearing one at a later.  We don’t supply masks, please remember to bring one if you are asked.  For ventilation purposes we keep the windows open and the door slightly ajar to keep the fresh air flowing, even through winter, so please dress accordingly.  When necessary we do have the heating on.

Studio cleaning

The studio is disinfected regularly and we ask that you use hand sanitiser (provided outside the door) before you enter the studio.

Payment will be by bank transfer only in advance of the course starting.  There will be deadlines for payment so look out for the emails.  You will receive a confirmation email stating you have a place.
